Interview With The Owner Of My Book Addiction
Stephanie Lunsford, Promotional Representative of Monique Happy Editorial Services, interviews Toni Lesatz, owner of My Book Addiction.
Stephanie Lunsford: Hi Toni, welcome! Tell me a little bit about yourself.
Toni Lesatz: Hi there! My name is Toni and I’m the owner of My BookAddiction.
It’s such a pleasure to be on Zombie Pop! I know there are loads of zombie fans these days, but I’ve been a true fanatic since the Resident Evil franchise began for the original Playstation back in the 90’s. Sure, I watched zombie movies long before that, but it wasn’t until those games came out that I became truly obsessed. My favorite genre of books, movies and television revolves around zombies.
To show my undead love for zombie fiction, I came up with a month-long event on My Book Addiction called zOctober. I had 31 authors of zombie fiction appear on my blog in one form or another during the month of October – reviews, interviews, guest posts, spotlights, giveaways. I also created a zOctober 2013 Facebook event page where we hung out and had a blast. The authors appeared on the event page the same day as their scheduled post on the blog to host flash giveaways and chat with the fans. It was so much fun, and I met so many new people and authors, that I decided to create My Zombie Addiction, a Facebook group where we could all continue to obsess over zombies together. Feel free to join! While it was a great deal of hard work to plan and run zOctober 2013, it was the best thing I’ve done with my blog so far, so there will definitely be a zOctober 2014! Authors of zombie fiction are welcome to contact me regarding dates available.
SL: What knowledge or experience do you have in the book business (or industry, blog topic, etc.)?
TL: I didn’t have any experience in the book business prior to starting My Book Addiction, other than my love of reading, of course.
SL: Why do you want to write your blog, My Book Addiction?
TL: I started this blog a year ago, simply as a hobby. I’ve been blogging for about 14 years about a lot of different topics, but none gave me the same level of enjoyment as reviewing books and promoting authors, especially indie authors.
SL: What is My Book Addiction’s target audience and what style and tone would you use to write posts for the blog in order to appeal to that audience?
TL: My target audience would be my fellow book addicts, those that enjoy reading as much as I do! I believe my favorite genres are enough to attract a wide variety of people that enjoy the same books I do. My tone is my own. When I first started writing reviews on my blog they were pretty darn boring. Lol. It didn’t take long before I became comfortable enough to use my own “voice” to get my feelings across, instead of having my reviews read like something out of a textbook.
SL: Do you have any writing experiences prior to starting your blog?
TL: Yes, I do. Besides blogging for so long, I’ve also been writing since I was a young teen. It started with poetry, progressed to short stories, then graphic novels, and finally my own novel, which I have been working on for the past year or so. Unfortunately, my interest in reading and reviewing has put my own book on the back burner, but I hope to dive back in soon.
SL: What would you like the readers to take away from your blog?
TL: Ideally, I would like them to enjoy reading my reviews, form their own opinions about the books I promote, and add truckloads of books to their TBR piles. My main goal is to introduce new authors and indie authors to readers. If I can put new books and authors on others’ radars, I feel good about what I’m doing.
SL: What advice would you give to others that want to start blogging?
TL: Find a topic you are passionate about and just go for it! It has to be something you love talking about, though, because otherwise it’s very easy to lose your drive. Keeping up a blog can be hard work, but if it’s something you love it’s all worth it. Then again, it’s your blog. If you want to do it just for yourself and update it only once a week or whatever floats your boat, so be it. Do whatever feels right for you.
SL: How did you get your following? What are your marketing strategies to get your name out there?
TL: I just began communicating with people through social media. After I started my blog I created a Twitter account and a Facebook page specifically for my blog, and then just started making friends – other readers, bloggers, and authors. Before I knew it I was part of a huge community of super fabulous people in the literary world. As with anything in life, you get out of it what you put in.
SL: Toni, thanks so much for the interview!
