Joseph A. Coley: EMT-EN, Author Of ‘Six Feet From Hell’

I really didn’t start as a writer. I never did well at writing anything in Advanced Composition in high school or college until I started writing about something that I loved.

That thing was zombies.joseph a. coley author of six feet from hell

I have been a zombie fan all my life.  Since I saw the trailer for the original Return of the Living Dead in 1986 when I was 7, zombies have fascinated and frightened me all my life.  Looking back at all the zombie lore that I have witnessed and interacted with all my life, I can say that I have rarely left a stone unturned.

I started writing about 2 years ago on a whim.  My friends knew of my penchant for the undead and would ask about my zombie survival plan, of which I have many.  I have a friend that is an English Literature major, and he pushed me to start writing what would become the Six Feet From Hell series.

I originally did the first one just as a way to pass time and didn’t really have a plan for it other than to have a little something to do when I was bored.  It took me a little under a year to do the first book, and as soon as I was done, I had more ideas.  Those ideas became the second and third books.  All in all, the series is around 150,000 words (so far) and has become an Amazon Top 100 seller in horror for all three books.  I have sold just under 10,000 copies of the series to date – far exceeding my expectations by a longshot.

When I’m not destroying the undead in fiction or on my Xbox 360, then I am working at a job that I love just as much as my stories and family.  I have worked in Virginia for the past 15 years as an EMT-Enhanced, and loved every minute of it.  I have had the joy of saving a life and the horrors of not being able to save one.  My job, like most things in my life, is my passion.

I served a total of 9 years in the US Army Reserves as an Engineer, and later as a medic.  I have the utmost respect for our armed forces, and I can say that I have worked with every branch over the years minus the Coast Guard and Navy.  I think our military veterans are some of the best, most professional people you will ever meet.  If you like your freedom, thank a vet!

I am currently working on a few projects.  The fourth Six Feet From Hell book Civilization will be released in September.  I have a Sci-fi story titled Lost Between that will be released before the end of the year as well.  I have a number of side projects and stories that will keep me busy for the next few years, both zombie and non-zombie related. I am engaged and will be married in July of this year.  I have a son as well as 2 beautiful stepchildren and a lovely fiancé that keeps me on my toes.  They inspire me more than they ever know, but I’m sure they have an idea.
